Who is the young man arrested in the murder of Trump ally Charlie Kirk

Authorities announced last Friday, local time,
that a young man has been detained on suspicion of involvement in the killing of Charlie Kirk, a right-wing political activist in the United States and a close ally of President Donald Trump. Kirk was shot dead last Wednesday while giving a speech at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem.

At a press conference, Utah Governor Spencer Cox said that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was taken into protective custody last Thursday night with the help of his father and a friend.

Robinson was arrested in Washington County, where he lived with his family. The area is about 400 kilometers southwest of Orem and near the famous Zion National Park.

On social media, photos posted by Robinson’s mother, Amber, suggested they were a close-knit family. Robinson was the eldest of three sons. Neighbors told U.S. media that the family belonged to the Mormon community, a branch of Christianity.

Dixie Technical College stated that Robinson was a third-year student in its “Electrical Apprenticeship Program.” Utah State University reported that he had studied there for one semester in 2021.

 How the murder happened

Charlie Kirk was the head of the largest conservative youth movement in the United States. He founded the movement in 2012 when he was only 18 years old. On Wednesday afternoon, while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University, he was shot.

A video circulating on social media shows 31-year-old Kirk suddenly collapsing, with blood spurting from his neck. A few hours later, President Trump confirmed his death.

Authorities reported that Robinson used a powerful bolt-action rifle in the attack, firing from the roof of a building about 200 yards away from the target. They further stated that the shooter fired while lying prone, which increases accuracy in hitting the target.

Reason behind the killing

The exact motive for the killing of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk has not yet been confirmed. However, citing the family, Governor Cox said that in recent years, Tyler Robinson’s “political attitudes had become stronger,” and he had discussed Kirk’s upcoming event at Utah Valley University with his family. Robinson was registered as an independent voter.

Charlie Kirk was the co-founder of an organization called “Turning Point USA”, the largest conservative youth group in the United States. The organization played a significant role in rallying young voters in support of Donald Trump during the presidential election last November. Kirk was also a politically polarizing figure, holding staunchly conservative views on race, gender identity, and gun ownership.

Although the attacker’s motive is still unclear, the inscriptions found on the shell casings at the scene have drawn considerable attention.

Utah Governor Cox stated that one cartridge had the words: “Hey, fascist! Catch this!” Another read “Bella Ciao,” a reference to an Italian anti-fascist song from World War II.

Other cartridges reportedly contained symbols and words believed to be drawn from online gaming culture.

Over the past decade, there have been repeated shootings and attacks on politicians in the United States. Trump himself has survived two assassination attempts. Moreover, the country has a long history of political violence spanning decades.

In addition, indiscriminate shootings in the U.S. are often carried out by young men suffering from mental instability. The widespread availability of powerful firearms in the country makes such incidents more likely.
