A participant of the Burning Man festival was discovered deceased, prompting a homicide investigation as confirmed by the Sheriff.
On
Saturday, around 9:14 p.m., a sheriff's deputy was notified by a participant at
Burning Man -- an annual festival held in Black Rock City, Nevada -- regarding
a man who was "lying in a pool of blood," according to a statement
released by the sheriff's office on Sunday.
Officials
"promptly responded" to the campsite and discovered a "single
white adult male lying on the ground, clearly deceased," as stated by the
authorities.
Law
enforcement established a perimeter around the vicinity, with the Forensic Science
Division of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office aiding in the "processing
of the scene and evidence collection," as stated by officials. The
sheriff's office also mentioned that they conducted interviews with
"several individuals present in the immediate area."
However,
as of Sunday, the investigation remains "ongoing," with a section of
the festival's "City" experiencing a "significant law
enforcement presence until the scene can be cleared," according to
officials.
"While
this incident seems to be an isolated occurrence, all attendees should
consistently remain aware of their surroundings and those around them,"
the sheriff's office advised.
On
Monday, the Pershing County Sheriff's Office informed ABC News that detectives
are actively gathering tips and pursuing information related to the death.
Officials
reported that no arrests have been made. The identity of the deceased, which is set to
be transferred to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office, has not yet been
confirmed by officials, as noted by the sheriff's office.
Burning
Man stated in a release that they are "cooperating with law
enforcement" as the investigation proceeds, and three public WiFi
locations will be accessible for attendees who "need to communicate with
loved ones," according to the festival.
As
of Monday, officials reported that no additional information regarding the
incident was available. They urged anyone with further details about the
incident to reach out to Investigator Josh Nicholson of the Pershing County
Sheriff's Office via dispatch at 774-273-2641.
According
to its website, Burning Man is described as a "temporary metropolis in
Nevada's Black Rock Desert."
"Tens
of thousands of individuals gather on a dry lakebed in Nevada, constructing a
fully operational city where they reside and work for a week, only to erase it
without a trace. In this crucible of creativity, all are welcome!" the
festival's website states.
The
sheriff's office informed ABC News that the investigation is complicated by the
fact that Black Rock City is a temporary settlement that is vanishing as of
Monday, following the departure of attendees, necessitating that officials act
swiftly before evidence is lost. Due to the remote nature of the desert
location where the death occurred, cell phone service is largely unavailable in
many areas, resulting in limited access to video and surveillance evidence
compared to other locations, officials indicated.
